Letters: Reverend Billy

The “protester” removed by police in your article (Good Friday: US shoppers hit the stores, 27 November) was none other than the Reverend Billy from the Church of Stop Shopping. While the article highlighted Black Friday as being the day that marks the official start of the Christmas shopping season, others, like myself, prefer to mark this as Buy Nothing Day. I attended a “meeting” of Reverend Billy and his Life After Shopping Gospel Choir at the Phoenix Arts Centre in Exeter earlier this year – the most entertaining example of agitprop theatre I have seen in a long time. Since the mid-1990s he has been preaching against consumerism, unsustainable consumption and the greed of banks (see www.revbilly.com).
